Screw
Simple Machines

The screw is another simple machine I will discuss.

A screw is a simple machine that is made from another simple machine.  It is actually an inclined plane that winds around itself.  A screw has ridges and is not smooth like a nail.  Some screws are used to lower and raise things.  They are also used to hold objects together. Some examples of screws would be jar lids, light bulbs, stools, clamps, jacks and wrenches. If you take an inclined plane and wrap it around a cylinder you get a screw. Its sharp edge becomes another simple tool, the screw. Put a metal screw beside a ramp and it's kind of hard to see the similarities, but the screw is actually just another kind of inclined plane.
